学习与工作经历：
1978－1982年，就读兰州大学外语系，获文学学士学位；
1988年，赴美国哥伦比亚大学做访问学者。
1991年－1995年，取得哈佛大学法学博士学位。
1982年起，任教于西北政法学院。
1985年5月－1986年9月，澳大利亚国立大学思想史研究所做访问学者，从事法学教学与研究工作。
1995年－1998年，贝克·麦肯思国际律师事务所工作。
1998年3月－6月，北京大学访问教授。
1998年8月，任哈佛大学法学院高级研究员。
2000年始，受聘于香港中文大学，先后在政治与行政学系、法律系担任教授及终身教授，同时兼西北政法大学兼职教授、美国康奈尔大学法学院客座教授。
2012年1月起，被美国康奈尔大学法学院聘为the Anthony W. and Lulu C. Wang 讲席终身教授。
2012年8月起，担任杭州师范大学法学院兼职教授，2013年11月聘任为教授。
